The One Thing I Wish I Knew as a Junior Software Engineer

Self-Doubt
Low Self-Esteem
Inferiority Complex
Imposter Syndrome

When you’re a fresher surrounded by those with decades of talent it’s easy to feel like you don’t fit in.

Like you don’t belong
Like you aren’t wanted

And these faulty beliefs can lead to self-defeating behaviors such as:

Not Asking Questions

You don’t want people to see how ignorant you really are. You nod your head when vague acronyms are you used. You don’t ask questions in meetings. You don’t ask for help on your work.

You now spin your wheels for hours on a simple task, just to have a senior jump in and save you at the last minute anyway 🤦‍♂️

They now think you can’t be trusted. You are exposed.

Only Grabbing the Easy Tasks

You don’t grab the ambiguous bugs, or the difficult tasks because the path to success is unclear. You stay with what you know, because the risk of failure is lower.

This sets you up for more failure down the road.
