Politics is Just Relationships

I’ve heard co-workers complain about the ‘politics’ at work as if that’s ‘evil’. I’ve done the same myself at times.

But really, it’s just relationships.

If you want people to listen to you, trust you, follow you, you have to get them to like you first.

And people will only like you if they feel you’re their friend.

Spend time with them, remember things about their lives, give them gifts. Laugh with them.

And all of a sudden — work becomes easy.

It’s the same with government politics as well.

People typically do not vote for the candidate with the best policies or most experience. They vote for the candidate they like the most. They vote for the candidate they can relate to and ignore any of the candidate’s bad behavior.

So if you want to be more productive at work — perhaps spend less time on the work itself and more time with the people around you.
