Candidate A is a recent college grad,
Candidate B has no college degree but completed a bootcamp,
Candidate C is a self-taught programmer,
Candidate D has years of non-tech experience,
Candidate E led multiple teams in a previous role, and
Candidate F was a successful small business owner in another industry

All candidates apply for the same role on the same team
All meet the basic criteria for the job
All get the same offer…

… except Candidate B

Her offer is substantially higher because the company expects her to be more effective in her role (Her bootcamp and personal projects all perfectly match the tech stack the role requires)

Is That Fair?

The others complain —

What about my college degree?!
What about my management experience?!
What about my other industry experience?!

The truth is, from an employer’s perspective, none of that matters

From the employer’s perspective, it’s less about what you are worth and more about what you are worth in that role
