Every Goal Needs an Exit Strategy

Sometimes we think grit and determination alone will enable us to achieve our goals; that we should keep pushing in the face of any obstacle.

There is truth in that.

But also recognize the importance of regular self-evaluation during your journey. i.e. Is the amount of pain and opposition your pushing through still worth the effort?

For example, have you ever:

  • Had a goal of running a marathon, just to realize a few weeks in that you actually hate running?
  • Started learning a new skill, just to realize it’s not as fun as you thought?
  • Had a goal to get a promotion, just to realize you actually hate the job?

Sometimes we stick to goals longer than we should in the name of “dedication” and “commitment”.

But blind dedication to a past goal can actually lead us down a path of increased misery.

Rather, as you learn more about the destination you’re pursuing, regularly reflect on if that outcome is still desirable, and if the effort is still worth it.

And be willing to drop your goal and dedicate your energy elsewhere.
