Don’t Trust Yourself

Human nature will naturally choose the path of least resistance.

Willpower is a finite resource, and we experience decision fatigue if we have to continually choose the “right”.

Instead of relying on our limited grit and determination, it’s better to place simple systems of convenience around ourselves that force good behavior:

Examples:

  • Distracted at work? Put your phone in your bag, instead of on your desk
  • Need some focus time? Turn off email/phone notifications
  • Want to retire early? Set up automated investments
  • Want to read more? Cancel your streaming subscriptions and put a good book on your nightstand
  • Want to exercise in the morning? Set the thermostat to be a nice temperature in the morning, and put your exercise clothes next to the bed
  • What to be more present in the moment? Ditch the smartphone for a feature phone
  • Want to plan a special vacation? Block of time on your calendar a few weeks before dedicated to planning for it

Success in our goals is less about sheer will and more about setting up your life so that it’s easy to choose the behavior you’re trying to reinforce.

Stop merely trusting yourself to consistently choose the “right” thing against a mountain of temptation to do otherwise.
