Decisions are not made in isolation.

They are the accumulation of every little decision you made up to that point.

Looking for a new job? This one new decision is based on at least the following other decisions:

  • What school you decided to go to
  • What major you decided to take
  • What industry you decided to first work in
  • What significant other you decided to date/marry
  • What city you decided to live in
  • What friends you decided to make

As such, this one new decision (looking for a job) is dependent on years of opportunities and subsequent decisions leading up to it.

Are the decisions you’re making now expanding your ability to make more decisions later? Or are they limiting your future ability to choose?

Example:

Are you consistently learning a new skill? Or are you vegging in front of the TV? The former expands your receptiveness to opportunities, while the latter restricts it.

Expanding decisions = More opportunities = More freedom
