Beware Traditions

Why do we regularly re-perform the same activities?

This can be at work, school, church, etc. (examples: an agile ceremony, a religious practice, or a family tradition)

We re-visit them to:

  • Remember something that’s important, or
  • Do something that’s important
  • Celebrate something that’s important

But sometimes repetitive traditions can have the opposite affect.

They can turn something special into something expected. They can take something unique and make it boring.

If your tradition is still invigorating you, that’s wonderful! Keep doing it.

But don’t keep performing the tradition if the value it was intended to generate is no longer there.

Life’s too short to waste.
